Ayesha Curry Is Calling Out the System for Saying She Has a ‘Geriatric Pregnancy’ at 34

Ayesha Curry is calling out the medical field for reffering to a woman in her 30s giving birth as a “geriatric pregnancy,” when being in your 30s is so dang young!

Along with announcing she and Steph are expecting their fourth child on the cover story of Sweet July Magazine, Ayesha talked about how, at the young age of 34, her pregnancy is considered a “geriatric pregnancy.”

“What’s been interesting has been my doctor’s appointments. I’m in my 30s, and so there’s all this paperwork referring to the experience as a ‘geriatric pregnancy‘ and all the concerns that come along with that,” she said. “I think there’s something that needs to be more nuanced when it comes to women, their age, and conversations around having children. Many women in their 30s and 40s are going through this for the first time, and being told you’re ‘old’ feels alarming and wild.”

She added, “I think the narrative needs to be shifted a little bit.”

Did you know that to be considered a geriatric pregnancy, the pregnant person needs to be around 35 or older? As per the New York Times, the average age for first pregnancy is near one’s late 20s to 30s. That was in 2016, and research shows the age has gotten towards one’s late 30s.

Ayesha and Steph originally met when they were only teenagers at a youth group meeting but didn’t start dating until years later. They married in July 2011, and have welcomed three children named Riley, 11, Ryan, 8, and Canon, 5.

In a previous interview with People, Ayesha talked about balancing her family and career. She said,”The first step is accepting that balance doesn’t really exist. We’re all just out here doing our best. Sometimes I get it right, sometimes I don’t — but I continue to show up for the things and people that matter and that counts for a lot.”
