With the Oscars, we’re obsessed with everything from the stunning red carpet gowns to the celebrity presenters, reactive celebrity guests, and more. But without fail, every year, we’re dying to know who’ll be hosting the entire Oscars. Ever since the first Oscars in 1929, the Academy always tries to get the best of the best to host the entire event — from Oscar-winning actors to beloved talk show hosts. After five years since his last Oscar shooting gig, Jimmy Kimmel is set to come back as the host of the 2023 Oscars.
Hosting the Oscars is no easy feat, as any of the 70+ hosts of the past 93 years will tell you. The hosts are tasked with keeping the whole, long-awaited three-hour (and sometimes longer) show going and keep everyone in a good mood. They tell you what awards are up next, crack some jokes, keep the party vibe alive all night, and of course, have an amazing opening monologue. The opening monologue sets the tone for the whole evening, with some hosts like Chris Rock bringing attention to underlying racism in the entertainment industry, while others, like Bob Hope (who actually hosted the Oscars 19 separate times!) relied on cracking joke upon joke.
While we’re beyond excited for the upcoming Oscars, let’s look back at all the Oscars hosts from the first awards show back in 1929. From Bob Hope’s 19-time run to shows that had five separate hosts, the Oscars always shock and amaze.
Check out all the Oscar hosts throughout the years below.
