Jason Kelce & Wife Kylie McDevitt’s Wholesome Romance Began With a Disastrous First Date

There are typically two types of first dates that anyone actively trying to find “The One” share with friends and family: the romantic first date, aka “I knew they were the one right away,” type, and the disastrous first date that makes it feel like finding true love is an impossible task. But if there’s one couple that proves love can bloom even from the most disastrous first encounters, it’s Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce and his wife Kylie McDevitt.

The couple’s story has been thrust into the limelight, thanks in large part to the fact that Jason’s younger brother and fellow NFL star Travis Kelce is dating Taylor Swift, whose dating life has been publicly tracked for nearly two decades. Swift has attended multiple Kansas City games, first watching the Chiefs beat the Chicago Bears at the end of September and at the beginning of October for a New York Jets game. While most headlines focus on the pop star and her beau, the older Kelce’s love story is just as captivating, if not for anything but its relatability.

Jason and Kylie’s romance kicked off on Tinder, the couple revealed on the brothers’ podcast “New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce.” When she first saw her now-husband’s photo on the dating app, she was half-convinced she was getting catfished.

“It’s either gonna be him or it’s gonna be someone pretending to be him. Hilarious either way,” McDevitt recalled a friend saying to her before she met up with Jason.

“Well, his profile at the time was something to the effect of; I want to have deep, meaningful conversations and talk about getting married and having kids or something like that,” she explained in the podcast, per New York Post. Kylie later dug up his old Tinder profile, which had the seemingly sarcastic lines, “I’m very in touch with my emotional side and love to cuddle. Not interested in a hookup. Only interested in intimante [sic] conversations and women who want babies.”

Whatever the reason, the line worked on McDevitt, who decided to go on a date with Jason. Unfortunately, it wasn’t nearly as fun as the NFL star’s tongue-in-cheek profile suggested.

“You fell asleep 45 minutes after I got there on the bar table because he was too drunk,” McDevitt recalled, with Jason adding “Not a good first date… [I] got a little too inebriated.” While it isn’t the best look, it’s hard not to feel a little sympathetic for Jason. After all, who hasn’t had one too many before a first date in the hopes of calming nerves?

Luckily for Jason, he wasn’t so far gone that he couldn’t see his person was right in front of him. “[B]ut I was sober enough to know it was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life. It was love at first sight,” Jason explained.

The sleepy first date wasn’t enough to scare Kylie away. The two got married in April 2018 and share three children, Wyatt Elizabeth, 4, Elliotte Ray, 2, and Bennett Llewellyn, 7 months, who they welcomed back in February. Kylie made headlines earlier this year when the Kelce brothers played each other in the 2023 Super Bowl and she brought her OB-GYN along, as she was 38 weeks pregnant.

So for anyone who fears they blew it on a first date with someone extra special, remember that not all first dates are truly indicative of a where a relationship can go. That guy who fell asleep during your date might end up being a real-life Prince Charming after all!
