Barbie Narrator Helen Mirren Shared Her Refreshing Take on the Oscars Snubs & We Couldn’t Agree More

When the nominations for the 2024 Academy Awards were first released, worldwide fans of the box-office hit Barbie were up in arms. After all, the previous awards shows, from the Golden Globes to the Critics Choice, all indicated that Greta Gerwig would land a nomination for Best Director and Margot Robbie would be nominated for Best Actress. The reality, however, was that both of them were snubbed.

And while even some of their co-stars, including Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, called out the Academy for the diss, many other Barbie stars, including Robbie herself, haven’t shown much outrage.

Most recently, Hollywood legend Helen Mirren, who serves as the movie’s narrator, gave her thoughts on the situation. “You can’t get upset about things like that, honestly,” Mirren told Entertainment Tonight at the 37th Annual American Cinematheque Awards on Feb. 15. “What is fantastic is that Barbie was the highest-grossing film that Warner Brothers has ever had in their lives. Do you remember who won best film of the year before last?”

With that said, however, Mirren did agree that Gerwig’s snub was quite unbelievable. “I mean, of course, I would have loved to have seen Greta [be nominated], and I think she should win best [director],” she said, before admitting that she also had tough competition.

“It’s so difficult, it’s not a running race, you know, you can’t — Christopher Nolan‘s work on Oppenheimer was spectacular, extraordinary,” she added. “But for me, Greta’s work was so out there, it was so brave, it was something we’d never seen before,” she said. “I just love the fact that the audience responded the way they did.”

In Robbie’s statement earlier this month, she echoed the same sentiment: it’s about what the movie did, not about getting an award. “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed,” she said at a SAG-AFTRA screening of the film, per Deadline.

“Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is,” she added. “But it’s been an incredible year for all the films”

I just suspect it’s bigger than us,” Robbie said of the $1.4 billion hit movie. “It’s bigger than this movie, it’s bigger than our industry.”

Robbie continued, explaining Barbie achieving its goal to “shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact” is what she considers “the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.” Kudos to both Robbie and Mirren for focusing on the positive!
