Rihanna‘s highly-anticipated Super Bowl halftime show featured a surprise guest who no one saw coming. The superstar took to a stage floating high above the crowd and cradled her baby bump in perhaps the most-seen pregnancy announcement of all time. Around 28.5 million households (many of which were likely hosting parties) watched her performance live, and you better believe we will be watching it again and again on YouTube.
Sports reporter Ashley Washburn tweeted, “Rihanna announcing her pregnancy was not on my #SuperBowlLVII bingo card, but I am SO here for it,” and we could not agree more.
The internet hype only increased from there.
“Rihanna for MVP (most valuable pregnancy),” said one tweet.
“…pregnancy announcement, fenty promo, all in one. rihanna is the QUEEN,” said another.
The Fenty founder — who took a moment mid-show to “fix her makeup” like the brilliant business woman she is — wore a red, monochromatic look, and the unzipped jumpsuit perfectly accentuated her growing bump. When she said she might have someone join her on stage, no one expected it to be her second child with boyfriend A$AP Rocky. Last May, the couple welcomed a baby boy. His name is still under wraps, but now we can start calling him Big Bro!
A$AP Rocky has spoken openly about wanting to “raise a cool kid,” and the rapper’s second child has already blown that goal out of the water. After all, this kid made the coolest debut of all time.
While a representative for RiRi confirmed the pregnancy, the artists themselves have yet to share more about the exciting life event. We are patiently waiting to learn Little Sibling’s due date and sex, and fingers crossed we will know more in the days to come.
The “Rihanna Navy” is understandably upset that this pregnancy likely means Rihanna won’t be dropping a new album any time soon, but she certainly pleased the masses with her set of throwbacks including “B*tch Better Have My Money,” “Umbrella,” and “Diamonds.” And we know that seeing another lineup of iconic maternity looks will ease some of the musical pain.
In a press conference leading up to her performance, the Grammy winner voiced her initial hesitation about accepting the halftime show offer. She didn’t know if the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was worth the time. Instead of being with her newborn, she would be rehearsing.
“No matter how you look at it, work is always something that’s going to rob you of time with your child,” Rihanna said. “That’s the currency now. The magnitude of how much it weighs when you make decisions on what you’re going to say yes to, it has to be worth it.”
Lucky for her fans — who have waited seven long years to see their beloved RiRi on stage — she decided that it was necessary for her son — who reportedly watched from stadium — that she take on this “challenge.”
“It’s important for me to do it this year,” she said at the press conference. “It’s important for representation, it’s important for my son to see that.”
And we know that one day, it will be important for Baby No. 2 to see that too.
