Living in Los Angeles, my hair and I are pretty used to dry weather. My hair is naturally wavy and frizzy, so while it does take a good amount of product to tame it, it generally stays put all day long. However, my friend of 20(!!!) years was getting married in Corpus Christi, Texas, and the weather was very much not what my strands were used to. Even though the wedding was in late January, it was still humid in Corpus — and the reception was right on the water at a yacht club. I needed to be haircare-strategic.
While I would normally use several oils and hairsprays to keep my ‘do in place, I only brought a small carry-on, so I really only had room for one or two products. I decided to bring Vegamour’s newest launch: The HYDR-8 Weightless Repair Oil ($48).
What to Know About Vegamour HYDR-8 Weightless Repair Oil
Vegamour, the haircare brand known for its powerful — yet gentle — ingredients that encourage hair growth (the GRO Hair Serum, $64, is a bestseller) and healthy strands (even Nicole Kidman is a fan) recently launched the HYDR-8 Weightless Repair Oil, an oil designed to smooth and strengthen all hair types — but especially fine or thin hair.
If you have fine or thin hair, then you know the potential drawbacks of using oil, or even too much product in your strands — it weighs it down and can make it appear greasy, even thinner. While my hair isn’t thin, it has definitely lost its luster over time, and I find myself cringing whenever I see a clump of hair in my brush. I can’t afford to lose more hair, or use products that take away any volume I’ve got.
HYDR-8’s formula leads with a phytoactive oil blend (marula oil, vitamin C oil, sacha inchi, and chia seed oil) that feels like water in your palms. In fact, when I was first applying it, I questioned whether it was enough product to do much of anything. (Spoiler: It was!) Fast-absorbing and silicone-free, you can use the oil on wet or dry hair, and before or after styling. The scent is light, certainly not overpowering (similar to other Vegamour products if you’re familiar). I chose to use it on damp hair, about twenty minutes after a shower.
My Honest Review of Vegamour HYDR-8 Weightless Repair Oil
I started with just one pump and worked it into my ends, where my color-treated and bleached hair was the most fried. I added about half a pump more to the rest to make it easier to work with before I busted out my Airwrap to give myself a quick blowout.
I found that the oil made my hair so much more manageable (even after using harsh hotel shampoo!): It was softer and more supple, and my split ends were totally camouflaged. After using the Airwrap to give myself some beach-y waves, my hair looked super shiny and healthy — and still bouncy and full.
The real test would be hours later, though — after the ceremony and reception, which was partially outside by the water. I’m here to happily report that the oil worked its magic and kept my hair totally in place.
It’s windy, but here you can see that my Airwrap-formed waves stayed put:
I’m not the only one who’s found success with this new hair oil. One shopper on Vegamour’s site writes, “Wow, my hair really feels so much smoother after using this oil. It’s very lightweight and not so greasy on my ends which is a plus. My hair has less frizz especially when it’s humid outside and I live in a tropical area, so this really works well.”
Another says, “It truly lives up to its name – WEIGHTLESS. The texture resembles that of facial oil, effortlessly spreading and absorbing into the skin.”
Bottom line? If you’re looking for a lightweight, effective hair oil, this is worth a shot. Especially if you have fine hair, or are dealing with thinning hair, this formula will not weigh your strands down. In fact, it’ll help boost its natural volume and appear fuller and bouncier. 11/10 recommend.
