As a kid, I always needed to have the television on before I could fall asleep. Since I was terrified of the dark, I liked having familiar sounds to listen to as I drifted off, so it doubled as a night light. But as I got older, my fears of darkness subsided, and the sounds of late-night TV began to keep me up and flat-out irritate me. Eventually, I could fall asleep with nothing on, but it felt somewhat forced, or I needed to be on the brink of exhaustion to reach a slumber quickly (which I am more often than not). But all that changed once I got a Nanit Sound + Light Machine.
If you know Nanit, then you know the brand creates one of the most sought-after baby monitoring systems out there. It prides itself on producing an optimal sleeping environment for babies through high-tech cameras, soft sheets, and pajamas so parents can try to be at ease throughout the night. And now, with the Sound + Light Machine, it just got a little easier. Plus, it’s 29% off today only to celebrate Leap Day!
Last March, when Nanit launched the Sound + Light Machine, I was extremely excited to get my hands on one. At the time, I had a 7-month-old niece who used a sound machine to go to sleep. As a first-time, overzealous aunt, I wanted to ensure I had everything she could need when she finally spent the night at my place. I remember being so proud to say, “I have a sound machine!” when her parents were going over a checklist on what to bring for her night away. And let’s just, say my niece and I got the best sleep of our lives that night.
Before that night, I had never used a sound machine. As I mentioned before, the TV was my sound machine, and it did an okay job for the most part. The Nanit Sound + Light was everything I didn’t know I needed. It has 11 different sounds, from classic rain or waves to a sweet lullaby and birds chirping, with a customizable volume on its app. My favorite sound to fall asleep to is rain, although the very first time I used it with my niece, we listened to white noise, and it was some of the best sleep I’ve ever had. I remember the only reason I woke up was because my sweet niece woke up (just once) in the middle of the night, and I had to soothe her back to sleep.
Aside from its slumber-inducing noises, the Sound + Light Machine also offers, you guessed it…light! It has endless color combinations that you can use to flood the baby’s nursery, with a brightness level that’s also adjustable through the app. Since I’m no longer afraid of the dark, I don’t use the light to fall asleep. However, I do use it in the morning to wake me up.
Through the Sound + Light app, you can schedule different routines for the machine. It can play your favorite sound at the right volume with your choice of color and brightness levels at the time that works best for you. My nighttime routine goes off every night at 12:15 am, and plays rain sounds at a low volume. But for the days I have to head into the office, I have my Sound + Light machine set to wake me up to soft sounds of birds chirping with a subtle yellow-white light that kind of mimics the sun. It also has a digital clock that I love because I didn’t have one before that, and it has an eight-hour battery life if you need to take it on the go.
Overall, the Sound + Light Machine has seriously improved my sleep quality. Most of the time, I knock out instantly and sleep soundly through the night when I use it. If you ask me, it gives a new meaning to “sleeping like a baby.” You can now get your own Sound + Light Machine for a little bundle of joy (or yourself) on sale for just $71 at Nanit.
