Until a few years ago I hated sneakers, I mean hated them. I grew up dancing, consider yoga my current go-to exercise, and love the instant elegance of a ballerina or loafer. In short, there were few reasons I needed to slip my foot into a pair of athletic-inspired kicks and I could count on one hand the number of times I had done it since softball. from college decades ago. Loaded up on intrigue as a fashion editor and writer, constantly reporting on the growing athleisure trend, but a few years ago I decided the sneakers were worth trying. And it was just one pair of slip-ons that totally changed my tune.
Going back to my single-figure age days living in classic white canvas Keds, I opted for a more grown-up take on the trend. They were made of black calf hair and Gap and offered the perfectly chic transition from the higher shoes to their sporty counterpart. They looked equally casual with a mini dress in the summer and black ankle-length jeans in the winter; I kept my toes comfortable as I walked around town; and, for less than $50, they seemed more expensive than they actually were.
Since then, my collection has grown. I splurged. I saved. I picked up everything from leopard to luxe navy velvet; rabbit fur lined and classic white canvas. Ahead, find the styles I’m currently coveting for summer, for all styles, sizes and budgets.
